Iwate

Where Gold and Iron Endure

Japan's second-largest prefecture by area holds a weight of history that most visitors to Japan never discover. At Hiraizumi, a 900-year-old hall covered in gold leaf has outlasted dynasties, wars, and earthquakes — standing now as a UNESCO World Heritage Site visited by a fraction of the crowds that queue at Kyoto's Kinkakuji. In Morioka, ironworkers still cast teapots using sand moulds prepared by hand, a technique unchanged since the 1600s. Between these anchors stretches an enormous, largely empty landscape of coastal cliffs, mountain rivers, and beech forests.

Quiet, enduring, and deeply crafted. Iwate is a prefecture that rewards time — the more you slow down, the more it reveals.
