Aomori
The Edge of the North
Japan's northernmost Honshu prefecture sits at the top of a region the rest of Japan often forgets. It is a place of extremes: deep winter snows that reach the eaves of farmhouses, summers that erupt with the sound and light of Nebuta Matsuri, and forests so old and untouched they feel pre-human. The Oirase Gorge is one of Japan's finest walks. Lake Towada is one of its clearest bodies of water. Sukayu Onsen has been welcoming bathers for over three centuries in a communal hall that has never once felt the need to modernise.
Wild, seasonal, and quietly proud. Aomori rewards visitors who arrive without an itinerary and leave without photographs that fully capture what they saw.
